Silk caps and hankies are made by stretching a single silk cocoon over a bell-shaped form to make a cap, or over a square frame to make a hanky. Both caps and hankies are comprised of many layers of these stretched cocoons. You can spin them by pulling off one layer (one cocoon) at a time by separating it at the edge or by grabbing a bit at the center top and pulling the remainder away from the inside of the cap/hanky.
